Earthquake Relief

In 2015 one of Nepal’s most devastating earthquakes in the past century rocked the country to its core. Calling on our global international community of family and friends and our local community at the International School of Kuala Lumpur $40,000 USD were raised to feed three rural Nepali communities. Medicines, tents and equipment were packed for those in need.

What most people don’t realize is that when a rural home falls in Nepal the year’s supply of rice that resided in its attic is lost. When that happens there is no food and there is no money to buy food. In a bartering system rice is the commodity of choice for payment. When the supply of rice is lost families do not eat.

With cash in hand four educators from the ISKL community including my husband, Kevin, bought Nepali rice in rented trucks to deliver to these isolated hard hit communities. For days they worked with local elders to distribute hundreds of bags of rice to each and every household in the area.

One of the volunteers, a nurse, treated hundreds of locals for cuts and bruises, illness and long standing issues.

There is never-ending gratitude to the leadership of the International School of Kuala Lumpur in that time of crisis. Decisive action on the part of Dr. Norma Hudson, our superintendent at the time, allowed this project to move forward with the full support of the school community.
